Chicken and Choc Dog-friendly Cookies

Rounding off the birthday box of treats I sent to my friend, these cookies were a little something to be shared. While I was sending her some noms I thought I'd send a few for her little furbabies, Rusty and Bella.

These cookies have to dairy, salt and cocoa removed to make them safe for puppy tummies. A treat you won't love, but your canid certainly will.

The dough only takes a couple of minutes to whip up. Then you can roll it out and use an appropriate cookie cutter. I used a doggy bone cutter for our puppies.

They hold their shape and don’t spread much so you can pack them on the tray relatively tightly.

Once baked and cooled, you can dip them in melted carob. You can just coat the back like I did, or coat the entire thing if you like. You could dip in half of the biscuit to make it two-toned, or just drizzle it over if you prefer.

But before posting them off, I had to make sure they were up to standard. I enlisted the help of my taste-testing Husky to help me discern if they were good enough for Rusty and Bella.

He was an especially keen volunteer.

"Ha-ha, mine at last!'

After spending the first minute spinning in circles from excitement, he devoured it in about 10 seconds and came back hoping for more.

We'll call that a tick of approval.

Chicken and Choc Dog-friendly Cookies


2 cups plain or wholemeal flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup salt-reduced chicken broth or stock
1 tbsp baking powder
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tbsp olive oil

150g carob, for coating cookies


  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan forced/350°F). Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Combine all the ingredients (except the carob) in a medium bowl and stir until combined.
  3. Turn mixture only a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.
  4. Dust working surface with a little more flour, then roll out to 5mm thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes from the dough, then transfer to the baking tray.
  5. Bake for 20-23 minutes, or until just beginning to colour around the edges.
  6. Allow to cool on the tray for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Melt the carob, then dip cooled cookies to coat. Allow to set, then treat your furbaby sparingly.

  1. Adorable Husky! Love your recipe! I cant wait to try this. Since dog food has pretty nasty ingredients in it I try never to give my dogs anything I wouldnt put in my mouth. They will totaly LOVE this!

  2. Sweetened and Unsweetend Carob?

    I loved the idea of this recipe, but I’ve never dealt with carob before. I’m not even sure where to buy it. When I looked it up on the internet, it seems that you can get carob chips at pet stores or online. I was just checking to make sure. You buy the unsweetened carob chips, right?

      I assume you can. I haven’t seen sweetened ones to be honest. I buy carob chips from my local pet store so they only have the unsweetened variety.

  3. Peanut butter is great for dogs. It gives them vitamins B & E, niacin, heart healthy fats and is a great source of protein.

    Like any treat, it needs to be consumed in moderation or it can become damaging. I

  4. Love the idea! I think I’ll try it out, but I might use different flours as wheat really isn’t all that good for dogs… I’m thinking I might mix some sticky rice and maybe barley or sorghum that are easier to digest.
    PS – as a fellow Sibe owner, does your boy also go nuts for anything with ginger in it? Such amazing dogs 🙂
