Last Saturday was my puppy Tobias' 3rd birthday. So he's clearly not a puppy any more but shh. He'll always be my baby husky. Puppy's birthday begged for some home-baked treats. Last year he got pupcakes, and in the interim he's had lots of puppy cookies, so it was time for something a little differ
This year he got a whole cake.
I baked him a veggie cake and filled it with cherries.
The cake ended up pretty squat, so I layered it to give it some height. I filled it with mashed potato and Tobias' favourite doggy treats: dried liver. I've seen some dog cakes layered with things like natural yoghurt or cream cheese icings, but my Tobias doesn't handle dairy well so I make his treats devoid of all dairy.
As I cut it some of the cake crumbled off so I gave it a try. I kind of tasted like a really band, unsweetened fruit cake. If not for the liver, and my sweet tooth, we totally could have shared it.
Once it was layered up I gave it a crumb coat of more mashed potato.
Then I tinted a little potato various shades of blue to make an ombre effect around the cake. I didn't get a smooth transitioning of colours as planned but the effect was kinda there.
To top it off I piped a little white potato streaked with some of the leftover blue and added some more dried liver treats to decorate.
Tobias was moderately unimpressed by my need to take photos and not just give him the cake then and there.
But puppies can’t have a whole cake to themselves, so we sung him happy birthday and sliced him a piece.
"What do you mean I only get one slice? No fair!"
"Hmm, but it does smell pretty good."
"Is that a liver treat I see?"
No surprises, he went straight for the liver treat before polishing off the rest of it. He gave me his bestest, saddest puppy eyes in the hope for more, but even birthday boys can only have treats in moderation. Time to work off that cake with a bike ride…
