Majora’s Mask: Mask Cupcake Set [Masks #1-3]

I mentioned when I posted the Majora's Mask Cake that I really wanted to do the entire set of masks from the game. Though these will be in cupcake form rather than whole cakes because whoa time and whoa wastage of cake.

I got some time last week to churn out a few of them, so here are the first three.

I figured it was only natural to begin with the three transformation masks. These are the three main transformation masks acquired throughout the game (there's one more final mask, but it's at the end of the game and optional): the Deku mask, Goron mask and Zora mask. Link acquires these in various ways, but the end game is that you get to transform into these races at will. It's amazing fun. And I guess useful, too, if you can stop swimming around as a Zora and shouting "Look, ma! I can leap like a dolphin!" for long enough to actually do some quests and save the world.

The face under the mask… Is that… your true face?

Majora’s Mask Cake

This is something I'd been wanting to do for ages, but with final assignments and exams and field work to be done, baking was just not something I had time for – let alone cake decorating.

Last week I finished my final assignments and finally got time to do this. If you are a fan of the Zelda franchise, or even just a Nintendo64 kid, you'll know what this is.

This is Majora's Mask from the Legend of Zelda game of the same name. It is a powerful, ancient mask that harnesses a great, evil power. It was used by an ancient tribe in their hexing rituals until they sealed it away because of this power. It was recovered by a mask salesman, then subsequently stolen from him by a mischievous imp, called the Skull Kid, intending only to have a bit of fun with it. He is quickly consumed by the mask's power and, through the Skull Kid, Majora seeks to destroy Termina by bringing the moon down upon it.

For a lot of Zelda fans, this is their favourite game. It's not mine – I was too disappointed at the time that they re-used so much from Ocarina of Time to be completely blown away by it the same way I was with OoT. But that's not to say I didn't, and still don't, love every minute of playing it. I was sold at getting to ride Epona as a foal. But really, what's not to love?

Eventually, I plan on making my way through all the masks of the game in cupcake form. The final products will be irregular thanks to my research and the impending thesis I need to write, but I'm determined to finish this project in its entirety.

For now, here is the most important mask from the game.

Lots more Majora, with progress pictures…

Joconde Imprime with Bumble Bee Mousse Entremet

I've been wanting to try a joconde imprime for years. I'd always been a bit intimidated by it, so I filed it under O for "one day" and never gave it any serious thought. But when this months theme challenge on was "layers", I knew it was high time I gave this a go. I'd been looking for an excuse to do another honeycomb topper anyway and had been searching for the perfect dessert to do it with.

I knew I wanted the joconde to be patterned with chocolate stripes, but it was the entremet I couldn't decide on. There were just so many options. I'd tried a dessert with chocolate mousse and layers of honeycomb before, but the honeycomb dissolved and the beautiful layers I'd imagine became one disjoined, albeit delicious, mess. I was chatting to my boyfriend about this first world dilemma when he said, "What about bumble bee mousse?"

I felt like I was in my very own Old El Paso commercial.

Genius

He’s not just a pretty face…

Bunny Birthday Tier

Cake commissions are one of my most loved and most hated things. I love making something inspired by the ideas of someone else, of taking a concept and running with it. But it's also terrifying. I'm the worst decision maker in the world and want to double-check every tiny aspect with the person, which is difficult as half the time the person wanting the cake doesn't even know what fondant is. I spend the whole time fretting about doing it wrong.

This cupcake tier was commissioned for a 21st birthday party. The brief was for fondant covered mudcake cupcakes, coloured hot pink and white with 21s and playboy bunnies.

Follow the white rabbit…

Cherry Ladybirds and Honey Bees…

Yesterday was the Zoology Department's Annual Bake-off. It's a fundraiser run by the social club every year and attracts quite a list of bakers. I'm not sure how long it's been going for as I've only been a post-grad since last year, but my impression is that it's usually a free-for-all. Last year I made the Dragon's Lair Cake for it and walked away with both Judge's and People's Choice awards. But this year the theme was limited to cupcakes and cookies.

It took me ages to think of something different to make. Eventually I came up with this idea for the bees, and everything fell into place from there.

Heaps of pictures of the cupcakes and chatter about the winners under the cut…

Skyward Sword: Scrapper Cake

If you've played The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, not only is your life complete, but you'll also know who this is:

This is the other Zelda fan art of was working on when I made the Sage Medallion cupcakes. It's something I'd intended to do for a while, so while I had some downtime I decided to embark on the project.

"Master Shortpants! Watch carefully while I demonstrate what a real hero looks like, bzzzzat!"

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — Sage Medallion Cupcakes

I've been dabbling in cake decorating for a couple years now and somehow it never really occurred to me to try fan art. I guess I was always waiting for an excuse, or a request. The Hunger Games cupcakes I made were my very first attempt at fan art, done just for the fun of it. Now that seal is popped it's opened up the flood gates. There are so many things I want to try as soon as time permits.

Given that possibly my biggest fandom is The Legend of Zelda, it was the next logical place to go.

It’s dangerous to go alone. Take these…

Pixie Tea Party

It's been a while since I did a novelty cake, so I decided to give one a go for my birthday party. I couldn't go past the teapot: a group of my friends from Uni, who've dubbed ourselves the co-op crew, used to meet up at the food co-op once a week to indulge in nommy vegetarian food, baked goods and tea (from the mouth of a camel teapot).

Cup of tea?

Juke Kartel Cake

Last weekend, one of my favourite Melbourne bands, Juke Kartel, returned home to Australia over Easter and decided to treat us with a little tour. Amongst the gigs was an exclusive houseparty scheduled on the same day as my birthday. I really couldn't think of a better way to spend my first night as a 24-year-old, so I grabbed tickets straight away.

The invite said to feel free to bring a plate. Plate… cake… same thing, yeah? Besides, there's some unwritten rule about birthdays involving cake, so I really was fulfilling my duty in bringing one along.

If life gave you one day…

Hunger Games Cupcakes

To say I live under a rock is an understatement. I don't watch TV, I don't listen to the radio, I don't read newspapers, because mainstream media just gets me aggravated. So it wasn't until last week, after a friend convinced me to join Tumblr, that via her fangirling there I even knew The Hunger Games was coming out. I immediately asked my boyfriend if he wanted to go – I had to wait until Sunday as the previous two days of the weekend were already booked in for a Sub Atari Knives gig and a Blacqk Audio/Evanescence concert.

Like many of you, I totally loved every second of the movie. So when I got totally frustrated with an assignment I was working on, I decided I should go into the kitchen and get frustrated with some cupcakes instead.

May the odds be ever in your favour…
